The Punjab government has given relief to traders and the public by removing the 8pm market closing rule until June 1, 2026.
A new notification issued on Friday said that shops, markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and food outlets can now stay open beyond the earlier closing time.
The 8pm closure policy was introduced in April as part of energy-saving measures during the global fuel crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East. Under that decision, markets in Punjab were ordered to close at 8pm, while restaurants and food outlets had to close by 10pm.
However, the decision faced strong criticism from traders and citizens. Business owners said the early closing time was badly affecting sales, especially because many people go shopping in the evening after office hours.
People also said that due to hot weather and local culture, markets in Pakistan become busier at night, making the 8pm deadline difficult for both shoppers and businesses.
Following protests and public pressure, the Punjab government has now temporarily lifted the restriction. However, the notification did not clearly mention whether the 10pm closing time for restaurants and marriage halls will also change.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended the countrywide austerity and energy-saving campaign until June 13. The plan includes reducing fuel use for official vehicles and limiting foreign visits by government officials.
